An Italian national, Dr. Alberto Cairo has been head of the Red Cross Orthopaedic Centre in Kabul for the past 15 years. He has seen five governments come and go and has survived two civil wars. His job is to help Afghan mine victims walk again, and to reintegrate them into Afghan society.
