The film is based on one of the fairy tales from Asbjørnsen & Moe, "The Cormorants of Utrøst", a story about an enchanted land just outside the island of Røst in Lofoten. Utrøst has greener grass and richer fields than anywhere else up north, and is only visible to pietistic people who are about to die out on the open sea. The film tells the story of one such man - as well as his destiny.
