Iiris is a capricious eight-year-old girl who desperately seeks her mother's attention. Her single mother Saara, a supermarket cashier struggling to make ends meet, has other worries; she is pregnant by a man she just met, Mikko, an unemployed fisherman. Also, Saara's beloved sister Eeva has cancer. One day Mikko brings fish for Saara and Iiris. Iiris wants to save a perch fingerling that is just barely alive. Her unwavering faith in the survival of the poor fish finally forces Saara to open her eyes and realise that perhaps not all is hopeless.
