A 12-year-old Afghan girl, Zahra, lives with her family in an asylum reception centre in Norway. They have been waiting for the letter that will mean either residency in Norway or deportation. Zahra dreams about learning to ride a bike. Her brother and her Norwegian school friends all have bikes and it is a long walk to school. But her parents don’t like the idea. They know that in Afghanistan a girl who rides a bicycle risks a bad reputation.
