For 300 years throughout India, hundreds of thousands of young girls have been subjected to ceremonies making them "Joginis". After initiation, the girl becomes the property of the temple. Since most local temples are financially supported by the head of the village, the Jogini becomes in effect his property. A Jogini cannot marry, leave the village, or refuse any man sexual services.
